A mini session is a short, cheaper session on a set date, at one location, with one setup. Families get photos for less; you get a full day of income, a pile of new clients and fresh work for your gallery. Done right, a mini day is one of the best days of your year. Done wrong, it is eight hours of rushing for little money.
When to run them
- Fall minis (September to early November): the biggest season, because families want photos for holiday cards
- Holiday minis (November to early December): an indoor set or a tree farm, delivered in time for cards
- Spring minis (March to May): flowers, Easter and graduation
- Themed minis: back to school, Valentine's Day, first birthday cake smash
Announce fall minis in August. Families plan holiday cards earlier than you think.
Plan the day
- Slot length: 20 minutes of shooting with 10 minutes between slots. The gap absorbs late arrivals
- Number of slots: 6 to 10. More than that and quality drops
- One location, one setup. Golden hour light at a park, or a styled indoor set
- What is included: be specific. For example, 20 minutes and 10 edited images, delivered in two weeks
A day of eight slots from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. fits the light in fall in most of the US.
Price it so it pays
Minis are cheaper per session, not cheaper per hour. Sample rates:
- $150 for 20 minutes and 10 edited images, for one person
- $15 for each extra person, so a family of three is $180 and a family of four is $195
Eight slots averaging $180 is $1,440 for an afternoon, before add-ons.
Sell the add-ons at booking
Minis are where upsells matter most, because the session itself is small. Offer them when the client books:
- 5 extra edited images: $40
- Full gallery (every edited image): $125
- Rush delivery within 72 hours: $50
- Print package (one 8x10, four 5x7): $120
If a third of families add the full gallery and a few add prints, the day can pass $2,000. Read how to sell prints and albums for presentation tips.
Book and get paid up front
- Paid in full at booking. A 20-minute slot has no room for no-shows. Send the invoice when they book; the slot is theirs when it is paid
- Let families choose the slot. A booking page with the open times fills faster than a list of emails
- Send reminders the day before with the address, parking and what to wear
- Have a rain date and say so on the booking page
On LensPilot, the slots live on your calendar, the reminders go out on their own and the mini session is one of the packages in your price calculator, so families see the price and the add-ons before they book.
Fill the slots
- Email and text past clients first, a week before you announce publicly
- Post a sample image from last year's minis with the date, price and link
- Add the dates to your Google Business Profile as a post
- Offer a referral credit, such as $25 off their next full session for each friend who books a slot
Turn minis into full sessions
A mini client who loved the result is your next full family session or headshot client. In the delivery email, mention what a full session includes and the price: a family session for four is $365 with more time, more locations and more images.
A sample mini day, in numbers
Here is how a fall mini afternoon can add up at the sample rates. Eight slots from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.: three families of three at $180, three families of four at $195, one couple at $165 and one family of six at $225. That is $1,515 in session fees. Three families add the full gallery ($375), two add the print package ($240) and one adds rush delivery ($50). The afternoon brings $2,180, all paid before anyone arrives.
Your costs: the location permit if your city requires one, props, and about two evenings of editing. Compare that with one full family session at $365 and you see why photographers who run minis well run them every season.
Mistakes to avoid
- Too many slots. Rushed sessions lead to weak galleries and bad reviews
- Including every file. Keep the full gallery as an add-on
- No buffer between slots. One late family pushes the whole day
- Delivering late. Holiday mini clients need photos before card deadlines
Plan it, price it, take payment up front, and minis become the busiest and best paid afternoons on your calendar.
